My Inexplicable Reaction To An Ex's Death

The morning started off like any other weekday morning. I got ready for the day, had a hearty breakfast, and promptly left for work. I prefer to be at work an hour before everyone else just so I can have a moment to myself. There is always a lot of commotion throughout the day, so it's nice to start the day in a peaceful manner.

As I scanned through my emails that morning, my heart immediately sank when I read "Sad news" in one of the subject lines. My email inbox is typically inundated with work-related updates, new partnership opportunities, and some spam mail, but a month ago, I got some unexpected news - my college boyfriend had passed away.

I have felt a bit lost ever since and haven't been able to fully shake it off.

His name is Jeff, and he was only 29 years old. He was always full of life and did anything to make people laugh. We had a rollercoaster relationship (the highs were really high and the lows were really low), and after 5-ish years together, we decided to part ways.

We didn't speak to each other for a long while, but after a year or so, Jeff reached out to me and a friendship started to organically develop. Everything was simple, innocent, and indicative that healing had happened post-breakup.

Looking back, I don't think we ever had an actual conversation, but I would get updates about his acting pursuits, and I would send him updates about significant happenings in my life. We truly wanted the best for each other, and it was a good way to make sure we were both doing well. It helped us both to further justify our breakup as well.

It wasn't until I started dating my current boyfriend (now fiancé), Evan, that I thought to separate myself from Jeff completely. I figured it was the right thing to do, and Jeff seemed to understand and respect that.

Fast forward 5 years, my friendship with Jeff became more absent as my relationship with Evan got more one would expect, but this is the part that confuses me. Feeling a deep sense of grief or loss seems strange, and I still can't make sense of what I feel or why. Due to the circumstances and the time that has passed, I feel like I have no right to be sad. I have no intimate knowledge of him or who he was in the last days of his life. I have no real connection to him anymore, but what I do have are these inexplicable and conflicting emotions.

I always sensed that Jeff was battling depression, but I had no idea he was suffering so deeply. He never allowed me to see that side of him. My heart breaks every time I think about him going through hours of convoluted thoughts and emotions...unable to leave his bed...tossing and turning...mulling over every detail of his life's grievances...crying...getting angry...then crying again. I keep thinking about how alone and how hopeless he must have felt. It didn't have to be this way, but unfortunately, more and more people are turning to suicide these days. I wish Jeff didn't let his mental illness beat him, but maybe this was his way of beating the mental illness? stopping his mind all together?

When I was dating Jeff, there were a lot of people who didn't understand my relationship with him. They didn't understand why I stuck around for as long as I did. They didn't know what we had gone through as a couple and frankly, they didn't need to know. He was my best friend in college and I'm so grateful for the times we shared. I wish I had the privilege to see him find his happiness and feel excited for him. He was such a light of a person, and the world feels dimmer without him.

It's such a tragic end to such a young life, and I hope any one of you reading this will practice being more kind, more patient, and more attentive. I wish I would have noticed the signs when we were dating. I wish Jeff and I had been better connected these past few years. I wish I would have known about his struggles, so I could try and talk him out of taking his own life. I wish he would have contacted me if he needed help.

Through all of this, I've learned that you never stop loving someone. You either always will or you never did in the first place. I suppose that's why you can still be affected...even after all these years. You never forget how much they fought for you and for the relationship. But you also remember why it ended and why you had to get out.

I also learned just how severe suicide is and how much it affects people. Even the word itself generates so much attention, but why don't the words mental illness or depression carry the same weight? The actions and behaviors leading up to suicide are often minimized or go unnoticed, and it shouldn't be that way. Mental illness and depression are serious conditions that affect everyone differently, and Jeff's passing has brought upon the realization that we need to do better as a society.

If the future is anything like the movie WALL-E, the world will continue to become more isolating and robotic. Human interaction and intimacy is so necessary for our survival, and we must work together to truly connect and be present with each other. We need to do our best to support each other.

On that note, please take some time today to reach out to people and let them know that they are loved. That the odds of them being born is about 1 in 102,685,000 (that's a 10 with 2,685,000 zeros after it). That living and life can be hard, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it. Hopefully it makes their day, week, month, or year and maybe even change the outlook of their life. Every little thing counts.

Please consider making a donation to the Brain and Behavior Foundation in memory of Jeff.

RIP Jeff

August 10, 2017

Well guys, we made it through one month of home ownership without burning the property down AND without killing each other. I'm calling this a major victory. It has been a super stressful summer, and I'm surprised we were able to keep it together.

Last day at our townhouse

First and foremost, we're so glad to be done with house hunting and can focus on getting situated. It's strange to think we'll live in this house for years to come, but it's also nice to know we won't be moving anytime soon.

Our move to the new house went pretty smoothly...thanks to Two Men and a Truck. Evan and I decided that we were probably too old to call upon friends or family members for help, so we thought we'd try hiring professionals.

MOVING DAY! Goodbye, Portis Ave!

We moved all of the boxes and smaller items ourselves, and three men, actually, helped us with all of our larger items (i.e. furniture, grill, tv...etc). Hiring movers ended up costing us about $600 for 3-4 hours, but it was well worth it. We were done with the move by noon and had the rest of the day to unpack.

Happy on the outside, panic on the inside

We had planned on celebrating our move that evening, but leave it up to me to muck it up. Let's just say I got into a little fender bender, and I'm still mad about it. Just a note for people who speed. Please slow down...especially during rush hour. Also, why do people still text and drive?! I don't get it.

Anyways, the accident definitely left a damper on the day, but Evan really came through and did his best to calm my nerves. His affirmation during trying times is just one example of why I want to marry him (and I'm smiling as I write that).

The rest of the month has been problem-free though, and we're grateful for that. Our 80 year old home seems to be in good shape and no issues have arisen. I feel like we've mostly been trying to maintain the existing landscaping as best as we can. Evan's dad bought us a lawn mower that we've already put to good use.

Evan working, while I take pictures...typical

His co-workers also gave us a gift card to Home Depot, which we used to buy a weed whacker. Did you know weed whackers are actually named string trimmers? Who refers to it like that?

So yeah, the yard is being managed, while the inside of our home still needs a lot of work. The biggest thing we've accomplished thus far was getting our giant wooden box spring up the tight staircase. We were going to buy a new one, but thought it would be a waste of money. Especially since we've been talking about investing in a new bed altogether. Thankfully, a quick Google search showed us how to move a box spring that just won't fit. Thanks Internet.

Apparently, all you need is a handsaw and some muscle...

For those of you who would like an update on Maddie, she's slowly adjusting. It always takes her a while to get acclimated and feel secure in her new surroundings. It took her 2-3 weeks this time around, and I'm happy to report that the pig finally feels safe to roam the yard on her own. She even found a bunny friend to harass. What a bully!

Professional bunny chaser

Beyond the housework, we've had a few visitors come through, and it has been so much fun introducing the place to everybody. We love our new home, and we hope everyone we who visits loves it too.

My parents and brother visited! Good times.

Also, I want people to know that this house not only represents a home to me, but also Evan's great ability to care for me. I'm so proud of him and all of his hard work. We both know this wouldn't be possible without his frugality and his sacrifices. He really is the best.

And you guys are the best for supporting me and us in all of our endeavors. I love sharing my life through blogging, and hope I can inspire you as much as you inspire me. Love you all!

HOW TO: Move A Box Spring That Just Won't Fit (Cutting and Folding)

We've been sleeping on the floor for the past 10 days...but not tonight! Woo hoo!

When we first moved in, the rigid box spring couldn't make it up the staircase, so we settled on just placing the mattress on the rug. Evan didn't like that idea, but I was like whatever. Also, Maddie really enjoyed having us sleep on the floor with her. It was like a slumber party!

Anyways, we contemplated buying a new box spring, but they're expensive and we're also in the market for a new bed. With that in mind, Evan decided to Google some solutions, which led us to folding and cutting our box spring. After a few hours of stress, we managed to get the darn thing up the stairs!

Sawed box spring in half, folded it in half, and moved it up the stairs

Reconstructing the frame with additional wood

Reattaching the dust cover

A bit messy, but it's done!

The directions on Instructables say to cut the dust cover in half, but Evan just removed the staples on three sides and folded it over to expose the frame. This way, you don't have to do extra work closing the center up later...saves you some time in the long run. That's the only thing we did differently, and it worked like a charm. I would say that the most difficult step is folding and unfolding the box spring. The steel wires do not bend without a fight!

If you guys try this, let me know in the comments! I want to know if this works for other people too. Good luck!

July 12, 2017

So, Evan and I finally closed on our house! Like what...who are we? I don't think either of us have ever felt this grown or been this anxious about anything in our entire lives, but we couldn't be more excited to be homeowners though. We're also so relieved to be done with landlords FOREVER.

A gift from our agent...too sweet

And as if there wasn't enough excitement already, we got engaged! I was so deeply consumed with our house details that I didn't see a proposal coming at all. I guess buying a home was welcomed distraction and helped Evan set up the most perfect proposal!

We closed on our house at noon on Wednesday and had planned on heading over later in the day to enjoy the bareness of the our new abode. Evan had been dropping hints throughout the month about having Maddie, our dog, film a house tour once we closed, and I loved the idea so much that I didn't even think twice about it. So, come day of, we strapped a GoPro to her and let her do her thing. I had my camera as well (I'm always documenting something haha), but I honestly had no idea he was going to propose.

So many people have been asking us if our new house feels like 'home' yet, and honestly, it has only been a week people! Things have been gradually sinking in, and I do have to say that it feels so special getting to step into our new home as an engaged couple. I wouldn't change a thing about how or when Evan proposed and will always remember that moment as sweet and simple and perfectly us.

I still can't believe that I became a homeowner and someone's fiancée all in one day. I never expected this year to feel so full, and I'm so grateful for all the highs and lows 2017 has brought me. Thank you all for your continued support, and I'm so happy I get to share my life with you guys!

Ring shots can be found on my Instagram and the story behind how we found our new home!

BEER FLOATS: Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream + New Belgium Beer Pairings

My boyfriend and I are HUGE ice cream fans and love Ben and Jerry's. We didn't think 'Vermont's Finest' could taste any finer...but I guess we were wrong? I'm still on the fence about these beer floats and where it fits into my life, but maybe this was something we never knew we needed. It doesn't get much better than beer and ice cream though and we deserve to self-indulge every once in a while, am I right?! Tune in to see which tested combo was our favorite!

Also, fun fact, my favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor is Phish Food and Evan's favorite is Half Baked.

June 21, 2017

We bought a house?! Yes, we bought a house!

For those of you who keep up with my Daily Blurbs, you already know, but for those of you who aren't up to speed, we made an offer and got a house on May 30th!

When we first came across our future home on Zillow, it was listed as "coming soon" and the first showing/open house wouldn't be till Memorial Day. Unfortunately, we had already made plans to go back to our hometown over that holiday weekend, so we moved forward and made appointments to view other listings in May. I think we saw a total of 8 houses during the month, but we always kept this house in the back of our minds.

Fast forward to a late afternoon on Memorial Day, Evan and I are driving back to Saint Louis and he has me read the house's updated listing out loud to see if we were still interested. My eyes glossed over the words 'Pinterest-worthy kitchen', and I knew we just HAD to visit this house. For as long as Evan has been with me, I've talked about how much I love kitchens, so he knew the Pinterest plug sold me.

This is the 'Pinterest-worthy kitchen'

We had planned on setting up a showing asap, but to our surprise, there was another open house the next day. I guess the lack of traffic on Memorial Day prompted another showing (probably because people were busy with their families and not trying to go to open houses?), so we figured we would go and check out the bright, subway tiled kitchen in person. Upon arrival, I felt a bit underwhelmed with the neighborhood itself, but I thought 'okay Jenn, don't be so quick to judge'.

*sidenote* We had been looking at homes in the University City area of Saint Louis and developed an unnecessary taste for old, luxury homes. Richmond Heights, our neighborhood, isn't as developed and everything is on a smaller scale, but in the end, we both agreed that it's more suited for where we're at in life.

Needless to say, we ended up loving the house after walking through it and placed an offer for it the very next morning. Then in a matter of a few hours, our agent called to let us know that our offer was accepted! Evan and I were in the middle of eating dinner and just looked at each other like ahh did that really just happen?! What a crazy ending to a crazy month of house hunting. Thanks for stressing me out, May.

We held off on telling anyone about the house till after most of the formalities, but now that we're confident that this will be our next living situation, I'm pleased to introduce you guys to the new home, which we named Pig Palace (Pig - our dog Maddie snorts like a pig when she gets excited, hence the nickname; Palace - because she is a queen...yaaas). The house's name will probably evolve over time, but for now, I'm really feeling Pig Palace.

*sidenote* Maddie was actually born on a pig farm and now she lives in Pig I keep singing 'started from the bottom, now were here' to her. She seems somewhat amused.

Anyways, I can't wait to show you guys the before and after shots of our home and the DIY projects we decide to take on. Please let me know if you guys have any new homeowner advice, and make sure you follow me here on blogger to get all of our home updates!
