MUSIC MONDAY - 4.1.2013

My obsession with Mariah Carey was re-unleashed this past week.

The first album I ever purchased with my own, hard earned dollars was 'Butterfly'.  The songs were probably a bit mature for my 10-year-old ears, but I loved it anyway.  I knew every word to every song, and I think it's crazy that my mind still manages to retain all those lyrics.

Anyways, I was YouTube-ing Mariah Carey videos and came across a thumbnail of Ariana Grande's cover of 'Emotions'.  I recalled highly approving Ariana's cover of Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep', so I made the obvious move and clicked on the thumbnail.  Needless to say, I was blown away.

This little YouTube cyber adventure unexpectedly tapped into the part of my brain labeled MC, and I've just been non-stop listening to Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande all week.  And yes, I know...this totally exemplifies my girly girlness.

1.) MARIAH CAREY - Honey
This is the song that made me want the whole 'Butterfly' album.  The hip-hop/R&B collaboration felt genius to me, and it was such a deviation from what she had done musically in the past.

2.) MARIAH CAREY - Heartbreaker
Another example of great hip-hop/R&B pairings.

3.) MARIAH CAREY - Emotions
Instant happies.  It makes me fall in love with falling in love.

4.) ARIANA GRANDE - Emotions (cover)
I've listened to many covers of this song on YouTube and this is, by far, the best cover I've heard.  I'm always skeptical when people tackle an MC track, so I was greatly impressed by Ariana's efforts.  Ariana's whistle register is ridiculous!  It's definitely on par with Mariah's.

5.) ARIANA GRANDE - The Way feat. Mac Miller
That kiss!  I died a little.  Anyways, this song definitely has a Mariah feel to it.  'The Way' samples Big Pun's 'Still Not A Player (But I Crush A lot)' which gave this song a youthful, flirty freshness -- soOo Mariah!
